They are joined by Senior West Africa analyst, Thomas Hansen, who speaks about the recent significant revaluation of the Nigerian economy and talk to lead Egypt analyst, Lucy Jones, who considers the implications of the impending court case against Muslim Brotherhood followers accused of attacking a police station last summer.
About the presenters
Charles Hecker, Global Research Director
As Global Research Director, Charles Hecker is responsible for shaping Control Risks’ thought leadership on geopolitics, global security, macroeconomics and political risk methodology issues, and their impact on international business. Charles speaks at industry, policy and academic conferences and represents the company’s work to the international media. Charles also contributes to the content and production of Control Risks’ research services and designs and delivers complex, multi-jurisdiction political and security risk consultancy.
Prior to assuming his current role, Charles was Director, Europe & Africa, Corporate Investigations overseeing the company’s due diligence, business intelligence, problem-solving and anti-fraud/anti-corruption services in this region. He took on this position after several years as the general manager of Control Risks’ Moscow office and as the director of its business in Russia and the CIS.
Prior to joining Control Risks, Charles was a reporter for The Moscow Times, an English-language daily newspaper in Russia. Charles also worked as a reporter for The Miami Herald in Florida, where he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, US journalism’s highest award.
Chirs Torrens, Director, Global Risk Analysis, Europe & Africa
Chris Torrens heads up Control Risks' Global Risk Analysis business in Europe and Africa. The team is responsible for all political and security risk assessment work undertaken by Control Risks in the region. Serving a wide range of international clients, the team provides a broad spectrum of services that enable clients to better understand the political, security and operational influences on their investments and how to address their consequences.
Prior to this, Chris has held a number of senior roles within the company including deputy director of the Client Services division for Europe and Africa, Director of the Corporate Investigations business in China as well as managing Control Risks' Shanghai office.
Chris has extensive experience working in China having worked as Associate Director in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Strategy Group and ran his own business intelligence consultancy in Shanghai. Before moving to Shanghai in 1998, Chris spent four years in Hong Kong as Head of Research at a government relations and public affairs consultancy.
