About the presenters
Charles Hecker, Global Research Director
As Global Research Director, Charles Hecker is responsible for shaping Control Risks’ thought leadership on geopolitics, global security, macroeconomics and political risk methodology issues, and their impact on international business. Charles speaks at industry, policy and academic conferences and represents the company’s work to the international media. Charles also contributes to the content and production of Control Risks’ research services and designs and delivers complex, multi-jurisdiction political and security risk consultancy.
Prior to assuming his current role, Charles was Director, Europe & Africa, Corporate Investigations overseeing the company’s due diligence, business intelligence, problem-solving and anti-fraud/anti-corruption services in this region. He took on this position after several years as the general manager of Control Risks’ Moscow office and as the director of its business in Russia and the CIS.
Prior to joining Control Risks, Charles was a reporter for The Moscow Times, an English-language daily newspaper in Russia. Charles also worked as a reporter for The Miami Herald in Florida, where he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, US journalism’s highest award.
Michael Moran, Managing Director, Global Risk Analysis
Michael Moran is Managing Director, Global Risk Analysis at Control Risks. A foreign policy journalist, writer and geo-strategist for investment banks and other institutions, he is author of The Reckoning: Debt, Democracy and the Future of American Power and co-author of the 2012 book The Fastest Billion: The Story Behind Africa's Economic Revolution.
Michael served as Editor-in-Chief at the investment bank Renaissance Capital and has been a collaborator of renowned economist Nouriel Roubini as well as a commentator for Slate magazine, the BBC and NBC News. He also spent a decade as an adjunct professor of journalism at Bard College and was the creator and executive producer of Crisis Guides documentary series for the Council on Foreign Relations, which garnered three Emmy awards and many other honors.
Michael is also a foreign affairs columnist for GlobalPost.com and his career has included periods at major media outlets including MSNBC.com, BBC World Service, Radio Free Europe and the Associated Press. His work has appeared in the New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, The Economist, The Spectator (UK), The Guardian, The New Leader, and he has spoken on National Public Radio.
Michael served on the communications advisory board of Human Rights Watch (2003-2011).
